In recent years, trust in food safety and food quality has decreased as a result of consecutive food crises. Consequently, numerous quality labels signalling process-related credence characteristics have been established. One of these labels is the Belgian Flandria quality label for fresh fruit and vegetables. Based on cross-sectional data collected through a self-administered consumer survey ( n  = 373), this paper addresses consumer attitudes, behaviour and perception towards tomatoes in general, and the Flandria tomato label in particular. Buyers, who constitute 26.8% of the sample, perceive Flandria tomatoes as superior to other tomatoes because of their guarantee of origin, better taste and stricter production control. However, they also report the strongest perception of Flandria as an ordinary tomato as compared to non-buyer segments. Overall, findings indicate that the Flandria label – after being intensively used for 10 years for a wide range of other fruits and vegetables besides tomatoes – has become fairly standard for tomatoes with little perceived differentiation apart from its certified production and origin.  相似文献

Conclusions  In this paper the effects of the reactivity of hydroxyl functional oligomers with a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent have been demonstrated by comparing the potlife/hardness of a 3.5 VOC two-component polyurethane clear coat based on a low TG, high reactive against a high TG, low reactive oligomer. The reaction rate of two polymers forming a crosslinked network becomes diffusion controlled when, during the reaction, the increasing TG comes close to the reaction temperature.4 If this reaction takes place in the presence of a solvent which evaporates during film formation and crosslinking, the speed of evaporation will affect both the reaction rate and the film TG. The results of this study have shown that the reactivity determines the potlife whilst the TG controls the hardness. The reactivity of blends of such oligomers against pure oligomers is different as can be calculated using the theory of branching processes and as shown from practical measurements. Blends of oligomers or a pure oligomer with up to 75% of the properties of the high TG, low reactive oligomer do show a hardness close to the properties of the low TG, high reactive oligomer which further proves that the chemical reactivity controls the overall drying performance. A fast chemical reactivity shortens the potlife with a risk of solvent entrapment near to and at the gel point which results in low hardness.  相似文献

Since the kinetics of change of target attributes in high pressure high temperature (HPHT) processing are not only pressure but also clearly temperature dependent, a control of temperature in space and time is indispensible. A tool that can easily detect temperature differences in prototype HPHT vessels during a HPHT process would aid the design of industrial HPHT equipments. In this work, the potential of ovomucoid as extrinsic, isolated, protein-based indicator to detect temperature differences inside a HPHT vessel was assessed. Ovomucoid fulfilled the selection criteria of a candidate indicator for HPHT. Solvent engineering was successfully used to shift the inactivation window of the candidate indicator into the HPHT processing window. Since, the dissociation equilibrium of buffer systems shifts under high pressure and/or under high temperature, a critical evaluation of the effect of a pH-shift of the selected phosphate buffer system in the context of protein-based indicator development was performed. The ovomucoid system inactivation kinetics were characterized under isobaric–isothermal conditions and modeled best by a first order inactivation model. A temperature dependent inactivation at constant pressure could be observed, which creates potential for the detection of temperature differences under HPHT conditions. These integrating properties were unaffected under dynamic, industrially relevant HPHT conditions.  相似文献

Proteome studies on hematological malignancies contribute to the understanding of the disease mechanism and to the identification of new biomarker candidates. With the isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) method we analyzed the protein expression between B-cells of healthy people and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) B-cells. CLL is the most common lymphoid cancer of the blood and is characterized by a variable clinical course. By comparing samples of patients with an aggressive vs. indolent disease, we identified a limited list of differentially regulated proteins. The enhanced sensitivity attributed to the iTRAQ labels led to the discovery of a previously reported but still not clarified proteolytic product of histone H2A (cH2A) which we further investigated in light of the suggested functional properties of this modification. In the exploratory proteome study the Histone H2A peptide was up-regulated in CLL samples but a more specific and sensitive screening of a larger patient cohort indicated that cH2A is of myeloid origin. Our subsequent quantitative analysis led to a more profound characterization of the clipping in acute monocytic leukemia THP-1 cells subjected to induced differentiation.  相似文献

Recently, the first prototype ovomucoid-based pressure-temperature-time indicator (pTTI) for high pressure high temperature (HPHT) processing was described. However, for temperature uniformity mapping of high pressure (HP) vessels under HPHT sterilization conditions, this prototype needs to be optimized. To this end, this work aimed at the development of an ovomucoid-based indicator with combined pressure temperature dependent inactivation kinetics and a sufficient pressure temperature stability relevant for commercial HPHT sterilization. After varying buffer type and the pH at ambient pressure and temperature (pHi), an indicator based on 1 g/L ovomucoid in 0.1 M MES-NaOH buffer pHi 6.2 was selected. The inactivation behavior of this indicator system is characterized by pressure temperature dependent (combined Arrhenius-Eyring) first-order kinetics in the processing domain relevant for HPHT sterilization. This indicator showed good integrating properties under isobaric-isothermal and dynamic pressure temperature conditions.In a temperature uniformity study of a vertically oriented, pilot-scale HPHT vessel, pTTI readouts at different coordinates illustrated low and high temperature zones. As the inactivation of spores under HPHT is clearly positively temperature dependent, the food safety objective has to be verified in the former sampling zone.  相似文献

We introduce a new concept for an all-optical flip-flop based on a single distributed feedback laser. The injection of external light into the laser results in a nonuniform carrier distribution. We will show numerically that this nonlinear effect of the carriers gives rise to a bistability that can be exploited for fast flip-flop operation.  相似文献

Video processing in software is often characterized by highly fluctuating, content-dependent processing times, and a limited tolerance for deadline misses. We present an approach that allows close-to-average-case resource allocation to a single video processing task, based on asynchronous, scalable processing, and QoS adaptation. The QoS adaptation balances different QoS parameters that can be tuned, based on user-perception experiments: picture quality, deadline misses, and quality changes. We model the balancing problem as a discrete stochastic decision problem, and propose two solution strategies, based on a Markov decision process and reinforcement learning, respectively. We enhance both strategies with a compensation for structural (non-stochastic) load fluctuations. Finally, we validate our approach by means of simulation experiments, and conclude that both enhanced strategies perform close to the theoretical optimum.Clemens Wüst received the M.Sc. degree in mathematics with honors from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Verhaegh received the mathematical engineering degree with honors in 1990 from the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Since then, he is with the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. From 1990 until 1998, he has been a member of the department Digital VLSI, where he has been working on high-level synthesis of DSP systems for video applications, with the emphasis on scheduling problems and techniques. Based on this work, he received a Ph.D. degree in 1995 from the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Since 1998, he is working on various optimization aspects of multimedia systems, networks, and applications. On the one hand, this concerns application-level resource management and scheduling, for optimization of quality of service of multimedia systems. On the other hand, this concerns adaptive algorithms and machine learning algorithms for user interaction issues, such as content filtering and automatic playlist generation.Reinder J. Bril received a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. (both with honors) from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Twente, and a Ph.D. from the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), The Netherlands. He started his professional career at the Delft University of technology in the Department of Electrical Engineering. From May 1985 till August 2004, he has been with Philips. He has worked in both Philips Research as well as Philips Business Units, on various topics, including fault-tolerance, formal specifications, and software architecture analysis, and in different application domains. The last five years, he worked at Philips Research Laboratories Eindhoven (PRLE), the Netherlands, in the area of Quality of Service (QoS) for consumer devices, with a focus on dynamic resource management in receivers in broadcast environments (such as digital TV-sets and set-top boxes). In September 2004, he made a transfer to the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Group System Architecture and Networking (SAN), i.e. back to the academic world, after 19 years in industry.Christian Hentschel received his Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.) in 1989 and Dr.-Ing. habil. in 1996 at the University of Technology in Braunschweig, Germany. He worked on digital video signal processing with focus on quality improvement. In 1995, he joined Philips Research in Briarcliff Manor, USA, where he headed a research project on moiré analysis and suppression for CRT based displays. In 1997, he moved to Philips Research in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, leading a cluster for Programmable Video Architectures. Later he held a position of a Principal Scientist and coordinated a project on scalable media processing with dynamic resource control between different research laboratories. In 2003, he became a full professor at the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus, Germany. Currently he chairs the department of Media Technology. In this paper, the first real-time implementation and perceptual evaluation of a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based optimal filtering technique for noise reduction in a dual microphone behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid is presented. This evaluation was carried out for a speech weighted noise and multitalker babble, for single and multiple jammer sound source scenarios. Two basic microphone configurations in the hearing aid were used. The SVD-based optimal filtering technique was compared against an adaptive beamformer, which is known to give significant improvements in speech intelligibility in noisy environment. The optimal filtering technique works without assumptions about a speaker position, unlike the two-stage adaptive beamformer. However this strategy needs a robust voice activity detector (VAD). A method to improve the performance of the VAD was presented and evaluated physically. By connecting the VAD to the output of the noise reduction algorithms, a good discrimination between the speech-and-noise periods and the noise-only periods of the signals was obtained. The perceptual experiments demonstrated that the SVD-based optimal filtering technique could perform as well as the adaptive beamformer in a single noise source scenario, i.e., the ideal scenario for the latter technique, and could outperform the adaptive beamformer in multiple noise source scenarios.  相似文献

Perceived reciprocity regarding support in relationships at work was examined among employees of a psychiatric hospital (Study 1) and in a study of employees of the Dutch National Railway Company (Study 2). Relationships with colleagues were more often perceived as reciprocal than relationships with superiors, and in relationships with superiors individuals more often felt overbenefited. Lack of reciprocity (being underbenefited or being overbenefited) was in general associated with negative affect, and these effects were independent of the effect of perceived job stress. In Study 2 it was also found that these effects were moderated by the individual-differences variables exchange orientation (the general expectation of immediate reciprocity) and communal orientation (a positive regard for the needs and feelings of others). Dredging of docks and waterways generates a large and continuous supply of sediments currently destined for disposal. Transforming this currently wasted materials into new resources still requires meeting technical challenges. One of the options is to process the sediments into a supplementary cementitious material by flash-calcination. This paper describes the effect of cement replacement by flash-calcined dredged sediments on cement hydration and key properties. The hydration kinetics, products and microstructure are studied to explain changes in cement properties such as compressive strength development and workability. The flash-calcined dredging sediments show clear pozzolanic activity which surpasses that of typical coal combustion siliceous fly ash (V, EN 197-1). This is manifested in (1) the rate of compressive strength development, (2) reduced portlandite and (3) increased ettringite and bound water contents. The results show that calcination can transform wasted dredging sediments into a new supplementary cementitious resource for producing large volumes of low-CO2 blended cements.  相似文献
